Job Description

Security and fire alarm systems enable a safer world, saving people’s lives and protecting their homes, their livelihoods, and their property every single day. Our mission is to create a safer world through professional monitoring. When seconds matter, our members are there.

With a 75-year history as a respected leader in education, advocacy and standards development The Monitoring Association (TMA) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead us through this exciting chapter of technological transformation.

Our member companies provide critical monitoring of security and fire, health and life safety systems for tens of millions of commercial, residential, industrial, and governmental clients across the country.

The growth of the Automated Secure Alarm Protocol (ASAP)—a service TMA developed with public safety professionals to digitally transmit alarms to 911 centers ensuring police, fire and EMS arrives on scene 2 minutes faster—is another example of how TMA is leading the way in enhancing the value of professionally monitored alarm systems.

TMA is a financially stable organization with a committed staff and a highly expert, engaged volunteer community. As CEO, you will build on this foundation and lead the association into the next era, increasing relevance to members and the public safety community amid rapid technological change. You will work closely with the Board and lead a team of 8 to connect TMA’s programs, events, advocacy, and operations around a clear goal: delivering practical, high-impact value to members.

In this role, you will expand and diversify membership segments, develop targeted programs and resources to drive engagement and retention, and ensure that TMA’s events remain essential platforms for members to network and do business together. Externally, you’ll represent the association in public safety, industry, and policy forums, building relationships with stakeholders (including sector leaders, regulatory and legislative bodies, and standards organizations) to promote the growth of the professional monitoring industry.

How You’ll Make an Impact: Key Focus Areas

  • Board Governance . Surface high-impact issues and offer clear recommendations to help the Board focus on the decisions that matter most. Leverage the Board’s deep industry expertise while adding context from market research and external engagements to guide TMA’s strategic direction.
  • Industry Relations and Advocacy . Serve as an ambassador for TMA, raising the organization’s visibility across public safety, industry, and policy communities. Build and maintain relationships with public agencies, peer associations, standards bodies, and policymakers to advocate for member interests and enhance TMA’s influence.
  • Membership and Marketing . Enhance member value through a segmented approach that reflects the needs of traditional and emerging players in the industry. Define and strengthen TMA’s value proposition and grow membership through targeted offerings, data-informed engagement strategies, and trade-offs between legacy services and new opportunities. Apply a marketing framework to identify gaps, refine messaging, and promote TMA’s impact to members and the broader sector.
  • Standards, Programs, and Events . Stay informed about relevant technologies and regulatory and legislative developments to guide the evolution of key standards, programs, and events, including TMA’s Annual Meeting and Ops-Tech. Evaluate legacy offerings like Five Diamond Certification and align them with current industry expectations, sunsetting initiatives as appropriate.
  • Strategic Vision and Implementation . Shift the organization’s stance from reactive to proactive by translating emerging trends—such as AI-driven and video monitoring—into strategies that support the future of the industry. Set measurable goals, drive implementation, and ensure all efforts create relevance and member value.
  • Team Leadership . Determine the right structure to ensure teams are properly equipped to support the organization's strategic direction within a positive and supportive work environment.

Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits

  • TMA’s office is in Tyson’s Corner, VA. You will enjoy a hybrid work environment. Regular travel will be required for TMA events and relevant industry events (ISC West, ESX, etc.).
  • The budgeted salary range for this position is $200K - $250K (plus bonus potential) with a comprehensive benefits package, including generous PTO plus 12 company holidays; fully paid medical, dental, and vision plans; a 401(k) plan with employer contribution; short and long-term disability insurance, and life insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Translate strategic vision into clear operational plans with defined success metrics.
  • Ensure volunteer committees and members are actively engaged and aligned with TMA’s mission.

  • Provide strategic leadership for TMA’s events and educational programming, ensuring high-quality content, operational excellence, and growth in sponsorship and attendance.
  • Oversee key events, including the TMA Annual Meeting, Ops-Tech, Mid-Year Meeting, Long Range Planning Meeting, and Board Meetings.

  • Build and lead a skilled, high-performing team aligned with TMA’s goals.
  • Maintain a culture of accountability and high execution standards.

  • Advocate for policies and regulations that support member interests.
  • Continuously monitor industry news, trends, and challenges to proactively position TMA.

  • Oversee TMA’s communications strategy to ensure consistent, clear engagement with members and stakeholders.
  • Oversee messaging and engagement across channels, including the TMA website, email campaigns, social media, and print materials.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in a small-to-mid-sized association, an association management company, or similar. Experience as a senior staff leader at a larger national association will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated success working with boards of directors or volunteer committees to drive strategy, advise on key issues, and support effective governance.
  • Direct experience leading multiple core areas of association operations, such as membership strategy and growth, meetings and events, advocacy and government relations, non-dues revenue generation, and external relations.
  • Comfort working in a technology-focused environment with the ability to learn and talk about technology issues relevant to professional monitoring.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing hybrid or remote teams of 5-10 people with experience in aligning staff and resources around strategic goals.
  • Industry experience is welcomed but not required. Familiarity with standards bodies such as UL, ANSI, or similar is a plus.
